CHAPTER 11

Jory sat next to Dak, watching as the man gently brushed his fingers through Jade’s hair, “Has Caden or Peth found out what’s wrong with them yet?”

Shaking his head, Dak softly answered, “Not yet. Caden said that the CAT scan and MRI came back good, so they know whatever the problem is it isn’t injury. Caden lost a shit ton of blood, so much so that I’m shocked they don’t need transfusions. Mason is helping to run tests and so I keep telling myself that everyone is doing all they can for them.”

“What about their brothers? Why aren’t they here?” Dak asked.

“Because they can’t be in the same room as Dak and not start shit. This is a medical room, and I won’t tolerate fighting. Dak has Viata rights, and that means he gets to be here for as long as he needs to be. They have visiting hours and strict rules during those times,” Peth answered as he walked towards them, pulling off his gloves.

Jory stood up, anxiously asking, “Nug? Caliph Avod?”

“Nug is going to be fine. He won’t be able to fly for a while, but he will heal, and there should be no lasting damage. Caliph Avod is still in critical condition.”

“What does that mean?” Jory asked wringing his hands fearing the doctor’s next words.

Two hands gently squeezed his shoulders, and Jory couldn’t help but sink back into the man behind him.

“It means that he’s not stable enough to determine if he will make it, Jory,” Groth whispered softly.

Jory’s breath caught in his throat. “Oh, goddess.”

Peth quickly said, “It doesn’t mean he will die, Jory, it just means I can’t tell you he’s going to live. He’s still unconscious and his vitals are unstable. He lost a lot of blood and the bullet did a great deal of damage. Caden and I have done what we can do for now.”

“What are the chances of him pulling through?” Groth asked.

Shaking his head, Peth said, “I can’t answer that, Groth. Like I said, he’s in critical condition. We’ve done what we can. His blood loss was significant, and the internal damage was worse than I’ve ever seen. Caden had far more knowledge on what to do than I did, and he took point in the surgery.”

Jory swallowed hard. “Can I see them?”

Smiling, Peth nodded, “Of course you can. It can only be for a short time, Nug is awake, but Caliph Avod still hasn’t woken.”

Groth gave another squeeze to Jory’s shoulders, and Jory was thankful for his added strength. Groth leaned down and kissed the top of Jory’s head, whispering, “Come on. Let’s go see our Nugget and the Caliph.”

Nodding, Jory turned to Dak, “I’ve known Jade for a long time. He’s strong and he will wake up. I haven’t known Topaz that long, but he’s Jade’s identical twin, and that means he will wake soon as well. I’ll come back and sit with you for a while.”

Shaking his head, Dak said, “It’s okay, Jory. You take care of yours, and I’ll take care of mine.
